Charles "Chick"
Sherwood
Charles “Chick” Sherwood began wrestling
during in junior year of high school after his wrestling coach talked
him into competing. Only two years into the sport, Sherwood remained
undefeated and won the
157- pound South Jersey and state championships.
Following graduation, Sherwood had three outstanding seasons at West
Virginia University. He won two Southern Conference titles and was
deprived of a chance at a third title when he was sidelined with
an injury late in his senior season. He started the wrestling program
at Falls Church, Va., where he coached two years while earning his
Master’s Degree. In 1962 he moved to Central Michigan University
as assistant coach in wrestling and track. Two years later he became
head wrestling coach and led his team to 149 wins in 18 years. His
last team placed eighth in the national championships.
