Al Kastl

Al Kastl stood as a football and wrestling standout during his years at Albion College, earning a total seven varsity letters (four in football and three in wrestling) and winning the MIAA individual title in the heavyweight division in 1970.

After graduation, Kastl obtained his Master’s degree at Eastern University while teaching at Starr Commonwealth for Boys and serving as head wrestling coach at his alma mater. In 1973, Coach Kastl landed a position teaching English and coaching wrestling at Fraser High School. During his tenure at Fraser, Kastl and his teams won a state title, had 26 state placers, and 48 state qualifiers. In all, he won four league titles, three team district titles, and one team regional title.

Coach Kastl served as the President of the Michigan Wrestling Association for eight years and has been on numerous wrestling committees for Michigan High School Athletic Association and. He is currently the State Chairman for Michigan USA Wrestling, having served that capacity for the past 12 years.

In addition, Kastl is a member of the USA Wrestling Board of Directors, the USA Wrestling National Coaching Staff, and he is Chairman of the Greco-Roman Sports Committee. During his time with USA Wrestling and Michigan Wrestling Federation, he served as a coach or team leader for Michigan Teams and US teams that competed on five continents. In 1996, he reached the pinnacle of his coaching career when he was selected to serve as the Team Leader for the Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling Team.

Kastl’s coaching talents were again recognized when he was inducted into Michigan High School Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in2001. Today, Coach Kastl continues to coach and inspire athletes as athletic director at Chippewa Valley High School.
